«Three ways of being out of equilibrium»
In each of these three lectures, I will discuss an emblematic out-of-equilibrium system.
The first lecture concerns classical and quantum glassiness—namely, the impossibility of reaching equilibrium with the environment due to extremely long relaxation times. Choosing spin glasses as an example, I will discuss their connection to neural networks and optimization problems.
The second lecture concerns active matter, which was initially introduced to model biological systems but has more recently been extended to the quantum realm, along with possible experimental realizations.
Finally, the third lecture focuses on the equilibration of isolated quantum systems and their random matrix description. These lectures will not be highly technical; the main aim is to expose the students to these active fields of research.
